'Between 1990 and 2007 the year-on-year growth in container volume was around 10 percent,' the port said in a statement. 'In the past couple of years even higher growth rates have been achieved' with volume this year increasing 16 percent to more than 94 million tons, or 8 million TEUs.
As a publicity stunt, the port marked the occasion by releasing hundreds of balloons with cards attached, which finders can redeem for various prizes–including a helicopter ride over the port.
