STX receives orders for two bulkers

STX receives orders for two bulkers South Korea-based STX Shipbuilding Co. said it received a contract to build two bulk carriers worth $129 million from an unnamed customer in Asia, according to regulatory documents filed Monday.
   The vessels, which can each carry 81,000 metric tons of commodities, are to be delivered by Dec. 31, 2011.
   According to London-based Clarkson Plc. $39.9 billion has been invested worldwide in new bulk carriers during the first eight months of the year, a decline of nearly 35 percent compared to the same period last year.
   Listed on the Korea Stock Exchange, STX was the fifth-largest shipbuilder in the world in 2007, employing about 4,600 employees across eight sectors.
   Last year the firm produced 36 tankers ranging from 51,000 to 74,000 metric tons and 11 container vessels in the 2,600-TEU to 2,800-TEU range. The firm also has backlogged orders for 156 vessels, including 117 tankers, 22 containerships, eight bulk carriers, one liquefied natural gas vessel and eight liquefied petroleum gas tankers.
