CUSTOMS PREPARES FOR WCO’s HARMONIZED SYSTEM COMMITTEE MEETING

CUSTOMS PREPARES FOR WCOÆS HARMONIZED SYSTEM COMMITTEE MEETING    U.S. Customs, along with representatives from the Census Bureau and the International Trade Commission, is preparing for the upcoming Harmonized System Committee meeting at the World Customs Organization next month.
   As a contracting party to the International Convention on the Harmonized Commodity Description and Coding System, the U.S. government participates in product classification meetings twice annually at the WCO’s headquarters in Brussels. The next meeting is scheduled for May 7-19.
   The Harmonized System Committee issues classification decisions based on its interpretation of the Harmonized System. The committee also considers amendments to the legal text of the Harmonized System. The WCO maintains the Harmonized System.
   The committee’s next meeting agenda covers a variety of proposed classification amendments, such as “high fat cream cheese” and uncooked pizza to solar-powered electric barbecues and motorized scooters.
