California shipyard launches “USNS Sacagawea”
General Dynamics NASSCO launched the “USNS Sacagawea” this week from its shipyard in San Diego, Calif.The vessel is the second of 11 dry cargo-ammunition ships to be built for the U.S. Navy. The first ship of the new class, “USNS Lewis and Clark,” was delivered to the Navy’s Military Sealift Command on June 20. NASCCO is contracted to build seven more.
Construction of the “USNS Sacagawea” began in September 2004. The vessel is scheduled for delivery to the Military Sealift Command in the first quarter of 2007. The ship’s mission will be to deliver food, ammunition, fuel and other provisions to combat ships at sea. The so-called T-AKE vessels have capacity to transport more than 6,000 tons of dry cargo and about 23,500 barrels of fuel.
