CBP stops coolant shipments U.S. border security officers have seized 11 containers containing the banned ozone-depleting refrigerant HCFC-22 at the Port of Charleston, S.C., since October.
   The gas was imported from Mexico and is worth almost $1.1 million, according to Customs and Border Protection.
   The agency acted to enforce the Clean Air Act on behalf of the Environmental Protection Agency, which must approve and monitor importation of the refrigerant used in small air conditioning systems and retail food refrigeration.
   HCFC-22 breaks down the ozone layer in the atmosphere that provides protection against skin cancer and its manufacture creates a greenhouse gas byproduct that contributes to global warming.
