The new 413,000-square-foot facility will include a service training center and regional offices.
The Port of Portland owns the 2,800-acre industrial park and is developing a logistics center within it. The site is near Terminal 6, the port's marine container terminal, and the port authority hopes the logistics park will attract marine cargo, rail and heavy distribution users. Subaru and its related entities import about 10,000 TEUs into West Coast ports annually.
Port commissioners originally approved a 12.44-acre ground lease in November, but Subaru officials decided to immediately exercise an option to expand within five years to 19.29 acres.
The Subaru facility is located in the Rivergate III section. The port authority said it signed an amended agreement with master developer Multi-Employer Property Trust for a 55-year lease with the port. Trammell Crow will develop the facility for MEPT and Suburu will then sublease its building for an initial 10 years, beginning in October.
Subaru's entry into Rivergate Industrial District will not affect the company's vehicle import activities across the river in Vancouver. The Port of Vancouver continues to serve as the West Coast port of entry for Subaru vehicles, with a 30,000-square-foot auto processing warehouse and 40-acre cargo backup area for its operations.
