The association, an industry forum for operational and safety issues relating to the use of intermodal equipment, held its third semi-annual meeting at Pearl River, N.Y. on June 12-13.
Among the issues discussed was the “shared responsibility” roadability proposal developed by a joint working group of the Ocean Carrier Equipment Management Association and the Intermodal Association of North America.
The proposal “represents an honest give-and-take effort to come up with a private-sector solution to better define the motor carriers’ and equipment providers’ responsibilities and improve highway safety,” said Scott Smith, chairman of the association and director of logistics at APL.
The carriers also discussed reviews of federal and state legislation, operational issues relating to rail transport of equipment, risk management, cargo safety, and inland transport security concerns in the post Sept. 11 period. Speakers from the Department of Transportation addressed highway safety and security issues
