On Jan. 1, 2002, Denmark transferred certain legislative and administrative powers to the Faroe Islands, including matters related to safety at sea.
The Faroe Islands home government subsequently asked for associate IMO membership. IMO now has 162 member states and three associate members: the Faroes and in China, Hong Kong and Macau.
The IMO is the United Nations Specialized Agency with responsibility for the safety of shipping and the prevention of marine pollution by ships.
