Miami airport facing tough challenges Miami International Airport is still in the process of massive capital improvement work, and airport officials will have 'at least another three tough years ahead of us,' said Jose Abreu, airport director, in his annual state of the ports report at the Carnival Center for the Performing Arts in Miami Wednesday.
   While massive terminal expansion work proceeds, Abreu noted Miami International continues to gain ground as the nation's leading gateway for international air cargo.
   The airport surpassed the 2-million-ton level for air freight in fiscal year 2006, he noted, and picked up several new carriers, including a new Korean Air service that significantly improves connections with Asia.
   He also said Miami is now the only airport served by all the members of South America's LAN network.
   Looking ahead to the time when massive capital projects are completed, Abreu said: 'In a few years we will have one of the world's premier airports.'
