New intermodal service connects Venice with Scandinavia

Goods coming from the Balkans will arrive by ship at the Port of Venice, where they will be loaded on a direct train to the Port of Rostock for departure by vessel to Scandinavian countries.    The Venice Port Authority has signed an agreement with the Port of Rostock in Germany and ocean carrier Grimaldi Group to create an intermodal connection between the Adriatic and Baltic Sea.
   Goods coming from the Balkans will arrive by ship at the Port of Venice, where they will be loaded on a direct train to the Port of Rostock for departure by vessel to Scandinavian countries. This is the first transport service along the Scandinavian-Mediterranean Corridor, the port authority said.
   The Port of Venice in November started an intermodal service to Frankfurt, Germany. The service connects the German city to Greece and other Balkan countries, with the sea leg operated by Grimaldi Lines and a total transit time of three days.
   The port authority said it plans to double the service this month.
   Meanwhile, railroad moves into and out of the port are up 31 percent in the first four months of the year, the port authority said.
