“The move follows an unprecedented period of consolidation in the logistics industry, which has seen its largest players acquire many smaller firms,” said Tim Frear, director of BDP Global Network Services, in a statement. “The sheer size of these heavily asset-based mega-forwarders has a way of treating customers like commodities.”
The network was launched with 14 member firms: The Keihin Co. and Keihin Airfreight Co. (Japan); Kanoo Freight (Saudi Arabia); Sea & Air International Shipping & Forwarding (Egypt); NTG Global (Turkey); Orey Comercio e Navegacao Ltda. (Portugal); Maliline (Israel); International Cargo Systems (New Zealand); Interflex (Colombia); Coanaca International Logistics (Venezuela); Rush Transport del Peru (Peru); Cal-Vima c. Ltda. (Ecuador); Double Star Logistica de Uruguay (Uruguay); and Apextrans (Switzerland).
“Together, this group of carefully selected firms can effectively compete with the spending power and reach of the multinationals,” Frear said. “Our membership-based program will enable quality firms to be part of a truly global organization without compromising client service.
“And the alliance has not finished growing,” he added. “It is a unique business model that will reduce complexity for partner members and provide access to the shared assets and geographic presence of a respected global brand in our parent BDP International.”
Each of the 14 “premium” members will have access to the assets of Philadelphia-based BDP, a global forwarder in its own right, including its information systems, sales and marketing support, transportation products, established operations worldwide, expertise in trade and security compliance, finance and legal issues, client relationships, global integration, and shared administrative services.
The direction of the network will be set by BDP and the members themselves, BDP said.
