NYK, Dualog form maritime IT partnership

The Japanese shipping company joined up with the Norwegian technology company to bring automation and “big data” analysis on-board at sea.    Japanese shipping line Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK) Line has entered into a joint venture with Norwegian maritime IT company Dualog to “push the boundaries for automation,” the company said in a statement.
   Initially introduced at the Nor-Shipping conference on Tuesday, the partnership’s immediate focus is a long-term project for enhancing NYK’s on-board Internet of Things platform along with reliable and efficient data transfer for “big data” analysis at sea.
   According to NYK Line, additional technology functions that will stem from the partnership include data gathering, ship-to-shore communication, data science and analytics, event analysis and intelligent alerts, preventative equipment maintenance, and automation and machine learning.
   “This strategic partnership will focus on pushing boundaries for the use of automation, the Internet of Things and big data,” said Anita Krohn Traaseth, CEO of Innovation Norway. “When a Norwegian company from Tromsø can enter the demanding Japanese market, anything is possible!”
   “This strategic partnership agreement is the result of a long-term effort from both parties,” added Dualog CEO Morten Lind-Olsen. “By combining the best of breed from both shipping and IT, the parties seek to create the cutting-edge digital platform at sea.”
