Port Canaveral ready for sand bypass project Officials at Port Canaveral say a federal harbor maintenance project that will move sand accumulated on the port's ocean inlet has been cleared to proceed this month.
   The Canaveral Harbor Bypass Federal Project will move an estimated 750,000 cubic yards of beach-quality sand from the north side of the ocean inlet and place it along two miles of shoreline south of the inlet.
   The sand will be moved through a submerged pipeline that will be laid temporarily across the seafloor and placed below the ship channel. The sand will be taken from the inlet with a hydraulic suction dredge and piped to the shore, where bulldozers will spread and shape it along the shoreline.
   Work will start in late November and is expected to be completed in five weeks to eight weeks.
