Genesee & Wyoming releases February traffic report

Genesee & Wyoming releases February traffic report Genesee & Wyoming, a Greenwich, Conn.-based short-line and regional railroad operator, Tuesday said its February traffic increased 4.2 percent to about 67,000 carloads.
Same-railroad traffic, which excludes rails built by the company within the last year, decreased by 4,800 carloads or 7.5 percent, to about 59,500 carloads. U.S. and Canada same-railroad traffic decreased 3,935 carloads, or 6.4 percent, to about 57,550 carloads.
GWI notes that the decline was principally due to reduced lumber and forest products traffic in Oregon and Southern Regions, and a decline in mineral and stone traffic in the New York-Pennsylvania Region.
Overall traffic for the year through February increased 2,369 carloads or 1.7 percent, to nearly 139,000 carloads. Year-to-date same-railroad results, excluding all rails built by the company within the last year, decreased 13,027 carloads or 9.5 percent, to about 124,100. Year to date same-railroad figures for U.S. and Canada traffic decreased 11,417 carloads or 8.7 percent, to about 119,800. The decrease occurred because of declines in lumber, forest products, minerals, stones, coal coke, and ores traffic.
