The Georgia Institute of Technology is planning to launch a new logistics research center in Panama in September, the business journal Global Atlanta reported this week.
The center's aim is to help the country become a trade hub for the Americas, as a new, wider set of locks through the Panama Canal promises to increase the nation's importance in terms of regional container trade.
The center is sanctioned by Panama’s government and will be funded through a five-year grant from the National Secretariat for Science, Technology and Innovation, or SENACYT, the report said.
Georgia Tech has invested in other logistics facilities around the world, including a similar center in Singapore opened 13 years ago and one in Costa Rica opened last year.
