New fire station for Long Beach port With the wail of bagpipes and the ceremonial 'push-in' of a fire truck, the first all-new fire station to be built in Long Beach in 22 years opened at the Port of Long Beach Tuesday.
   The new Terminal Island facility will accommodate an on-duty crew of four firefighters equipped with special hazardous material vehicles in addition to a typical compliment of firefighting equipment. The station's crew is specially trained to deal with port-specific incidents such as industrial fires and chemical spills.
   The port picked up the $12 million tab for the land, construction and equipment for the new station.
   The new Station 24, one of four fire stations within the port, replaces a nearby temporary station housed within a former U.S. Navy building for more than five years.
