Port of NY/NJ box growth continues in January

The largest port on the U.S. East Coast handled 585,864 TEUs during the month, the most of any January in port history, according to the most recent data from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ).    The Port of New York and New Jersey handled 585,864 TEUs in January 2018, surpassing the previous monthly record set in January 2017 by 13.2 percent, according to the most recent data from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ).
   The January cargo volumes were also the fifth highest of any month in port history, according to PANYNJ.
   Loaded imports soared 18.5 percent to 309,003 TEUs for the month, while loaded exports ticked up 1.7 percent to 112,839 TEUs compared with January 2017.
   Throughput of empty export containers rose 12.4 percent year-over-year to 162,070 TEUs, and empty imports climbed 7.9 percent to 1,898 TEUs.
   ExpressRail, the port authority’s ship-to-rail system serving New York and New Jersey marine terminals, also saw significant growth in volumes, moving 50,303 containers, 19.8 percent more than in the same month a year ago.
   In addition to containerized cargo, the port posted a 3.1 percent increase in vehicle volumes to 50,596 units.
   The Port of New York and New Jersey, the busiest cargo gateway on the U.S. East Coast and third largest in the country, handled a record 6.71 million TEUs in 2017, surpassing the previous high-water mark of 6.37 million TEUs set in 2015 by 5.3 percent.
