Crowley salutes winning university team

Crowley salutes winning university team Crowley Maritime Corp. and an official from the Puerto Rico House of Representatives held a ceremony last week recognizing the work of a group of University of Puerto Rico students who won the top award at the U.S. Department of Energy's Solar Decathlon competition held in Washington, D.C. during October.
   Crowley's liner services unit moved the solar house made by the students from San Juan to Jacksonville to Washington. The student team bested 19 other entries from some of the most prestigious universities in the United States, Europe and Canada.

A ceremony at the Crowley Liner Services terminal at the Port of San Juan honored a group of students from the University of Puerto Rico who won the U.S. Department of Energy's Solar Decathlon competition held in Washington, D.C during October. From left: students Jorge Mendez, Laura Gonzalez, and Ariel Santiago; Roberto Lugo, Crowley vice president and Puerto Rico service general manager; Jose Chico, president of the Puerto Rico House of Representatives' Commission for Socioeconomic Development and Planning; and faculty members Jorge Ramirez, who was in charge of the project, Sonia Miranda, who is in charge of the next solar house project in 2009, and Javier Rodriguez, dean of the university's School of Architecture, Rio Piedras campus.

   The ceremony honoring the students' accomplishment was held at Crowley's Isla Grande terminal at the Port of San Juan. The award was presented by Jose Chico, president of the Puerto Rico House of Representatives' Commission for Socioeconomic Development and Planning.
