Busan New Port to get tandem lift quay cranes through 2011 The Port of Busan said Friday that the new Hanjin terminal in Busan New Port will operate with 10 tandem lift quay cranes when it opens in Janaury 2009.
   The port said the tandem cranes, which can lift two 40-foot containers simultaneously, will boost crane productivity from 36 moves per hour to 54. The tandem cranes are currently in use at the Yangshan deepwater port in Shanghai and Jebel Ali Port in Dubai. Jebel Ali teamed up with crane manufacturing giant ZPMC to originally develop the twin 40-foot cranes.
   The Hanjin terminal will be the second terminal to open at Busan, and will see all of Hanjin’s services shift from Busan’s old port to the new facility some 30 kilometers west of downtown Busan. The current terminal, operated by Dubai Ports World, will also see seven tandem lift cranes arrive at three different berths as it expands through 2011. A third terminal, operated by Hyundai Merchant Marine will get 11 tandem lift cranes on its four berths as well.
