APM Terminals adds four cranes in Apapa, Nigeria

APM Terminals adds four cranes in Apapa, Nigeria APM Terminals has more than doubled the quay-side capacity of its Apapa Container Terminal in Nigeria with the installation of four more gantry cranes.
The Hague, Netherlands based terminals arm of the A.P. Moller – Maersk Group said that since privatization of operations at the Port of Apapa in 2006, vessel calls at the terminal have grown 30 percent. The growth includes an increase in “gearless” liner vessels that don’t have their own cranes for cargo handling. APM said the subsequent improvement in productivity enabled shipping lines to cancel their congestion surcharges, saving the Nigerian economy $200 million per year since it assumed operational control of the facility.
“In the past two years, we have seen tremendous improvement and growth in Nigeria's port infrastructure,” said Michael Lund Hansen, managing director of APM Terminals Apapa Ltd. “The results of this investment are tangible and have continued to bring benefit to Nigeria as international trade continues to increase. The arrival of these four additional gantry cranes is an important milestone enabling us to serve the people of Nigeria even better.”
