DP World: London Gateway will open in 2013

   DP World said it will open its London Gateway, a new global shipping port and logistics center on the Thames estuary, in the fourth quarter of 2013.
   The facility will have an initial capacity of 1.6 million TEUs.
   The Dubai-based terminal company said construction for the project began in 2010 and it expects to invest a further $1 billion over the next three years.
   DP World noted that as many as 36,000 jobs will be created in the long term from the project, which will combine a deep-sea port with distribution space.
   The company also today awarded four port equipment contracts. Representatives from companies ZPMC and Cargotec attended an event at London Gateway. ZPMC will provide eight quay cranes, which will be the largest in the world, and able to handle the next generation 18,000-TEU container vessels. ZPMC will also provide rail mounted gantry cranes for the port’s rail terminal. Cargotec will provide automated stacking cranes and straddle carriers to the port.
