PORT OF BRUNSWICK’s COLONEL’s ISLAND TERMINAL SLATED FOR EXPANSION

PORT OF BRUNSWICKÆS COLONELÆS ISLAND TERMINAL SLATED FOR EXPANSION    The Georgia Ports Authority has approved the expansion of the auto processing facilities at the Port of Brunswick's Colonel's Island Terminal.
   The $7-million expansion, which will add about 50 acres and property and a 23,700-square-foot vehicle processing building, is in response to recent commitments by Volvo Cars of North America LLC and Porsche Cars North America Inc. to begin storing and processing cars at the terminal.
   Volvo and Porsche are expected to 'generate approximately 44,000 new automobiles through Colonel's Island Terminal annually, representing a 19-percent increase over present volumes,' said Doug J. Marchand, the port authority's executive director.
   APS West Coast Inc., the auto processor selected by the two automakers, is funding the expansion, which will boost its leased property at the terminal to about 107 acres. Two other auto processors operate out of the terminal.
   A dozen automakers use Colonel's Island for inbound and outbound services. For inbound services, the automakers are Audi, Hyundai Motor America, Jaguar Cars, Land Rover North America Inc., Mitsubishi Motor Sales of America, Porsche, Saab Cars USA Inc., Volkswagen of America Inc. and Volvo. Ford Motor Co., General Motors Corp. and Mercedes Benz use the terminal for outbound services. In addition, American Auto Logistics Inc. imports and exports vehicles for the U.S. government's Military Traffic Management Command via Brunswick.
   Ocean carriers providing roll-on/roll-off service to and from the Port of Brunswick include American Roll On Roll Off Carrier LLC, Hual North America, Hyundai Merchant Marine, 'K' Line, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, NYK Line, VW Transport and Wallenius Wilhelmsen Lines.
