The $6 million deal will see AT&T add wireless service to US Airways' existing system of voice and Internet Protocol-based data and networking services, which are used to run the air carrier's domestic operations and call center. The agreement is an expansion of a longstanding service contract between the two for more than a decade.
The addition of the new capabilities, which utilize handheld bar code scanners connected wirelessly to the AT&T network, will allow US Airways to provide real-time tracking to its global cargo shipping customers.
The new wireless services will also provide US Airways' customers with access to corporate e-mail through BlackBerry and voice service for domestic and international corporate business travel.
San Antonio, Texas-based AT&T already provides similar services to several major U.S. airlines.
US Airways, with primary hubs in Phoenix, Charlotte, N.C., Philadelphia, and Las Vegas, operates more than 3,800 flights a day serving more than 230 communities in the United States, Canada, Europe, the Caribbean and Latin America.
