Los Angeles port attracting more ôgreenö ships The number of 'green' ships calling at the Port of Los Angeles continues to grow, with the seventh of Evergreen's new advanced technology S-Class mega ships, the Ever Strong, making her maiden call at the port last week.
   The Ever Strong, which sails a transpacific route linking Southern China, Hong Kong and Taiwan to the U.S. West Coast, is part of a series of 10 Evergreen Group S-type container vessels with environmental features that go beyond new and soon-to-be introduced international green standards. These vessels feature include plug-into-shore cold-ironing technology, main engines and generators that incorporate low nitrous oxides-emitting technology, onboard electric-powered equipment, low sulfur fuel-burning capability when sailing in restricted areas, and an advanced anti-fouling exterior and undercoating to minimize marine life impact.
   The Ever Strong joins her sister S-Class mega ships — Ever Superb and Ever Steady, and Hatsu Line vessels Hatsu Sigma, Hatsu Smart, Hatsu Smile and Hatsu Shine — which each called at the Port of Los Angeles within the last year.
   The Port of Los Angeles, and neighboring Port of Long Beach, have been identified as the single-largest point sources of diesel emission in the Southern California basin. Pollution from vessels calling at the port complex is a major contributor to the ports' total emissions.
   The two ports, which together make up one of the busiest container terminal complexes in the world, have come under ever-increasing pressure from government and community leaders to reduce emissions from port activity.
