Senators amended a state bill Thursday requiring the Port Authority of Guam to develop and submit a financial feasibility plan for the $195 million Port Modernization Master Plan.
The master plan outlines expansion and improvement projects at Guam’s commercial seaport considered critical to handling an influx of goods when the U.S. military begins transferring personnel from Okinawa to Guam in 2010. The plan, developed by port consultants Parsons Brinckerhoff International, must be approved by the island nation's legislature before it can be implemented. The legislature received the plan in October and has 60 days to act on it — a deadline that ends Monday.
Senators said Thursday that they wanted to be sure the port modernization funding plan, which calls for most funds to come from federal sources, is realistic.
Port officials said a financial feasibility plan had been prepared and it would present it to the Senate soon.
