The e-commerce giant said it will employ 1,500 permanent workers at the Essex facility once it’s completed next year, in addition to creating 500 new jobs at a warehouse in Doncaster, South Yorkshire.
The new jobs are in addition to the 3,500 Amazon previously announced it intends to bring to the U.K. during 2016. Those positions range from head office jobs, research and development, customer service, fashion photography, Amazon Web Services and other distribution center positions.
In all, Amazon’s total full-time permanent employees are expected to surpass 15,500 by the end of this year.
Amazon VP of U.K. operations John Tagawa said the company will need the additional DCs to meet increasing customer demand, expand product selection and support a growing number of independent small businesses selling products on Amazon Marketplace.
In addition to the Doncaster and Tilbury facilities, Amazon has fulfillment centers in Dunfermline, Dunstable, Gourock, Hemel Hempstead, Milton Keynes, Peterborough, Rugeley and Swansea Bay, with plans to open two more warehouses this year in Manchester and Coalville, Leicestershire.
