South Korea’s Hanjin Shipping will take an additional
two 5,600-TEU containerships on charter from the German finance and shipowning company
Conti Reederei.
The contract for the two post-Panamax containerships follows Hanjin’s
previous charter contracts for five 5,600-TEU ships, also with Conti Reederei.
All seven ships will be built by Hanjin Heavy Industries, the sister
company of Hanjin Shipping. They are scheduled to be delivered between December 1999 and
the fourth quarter of 2000.
Hanjin Shipping said that the new ships will be deployed in a
"pendulum" service, calling at the U.S. West Coast, Asia and Europe, operated by
the United Alliance.
The United Alliance carriers are Hanjin, DSR-Senator, Cho Yang and
UASC.
At the end of 2000, Hanjin’s fleet will consist of 55 ships with a
combined capacity of 190,000 TEUs.
