XPO drivers in Trenton, N.J. vote to join Teamsters

However, an XPO spokesperson told American Shipper only 178 of the company’s 44,000 North American employees have voted in favor of the Teamsters since 2015, and none of its locations have a collective bargaining contract in place.    XPO Logistics drivers in Trenton, N.J. voted to join Teamsters Local 701 on Friday, the union said.
   However, drivers in Elgin, Ill. and dockworkers in Aurora, Ill. voted down Teamster representation.
   In February, union members and supporters gathered at the Journal of Commerce’s annual TPM Conference in Long Beach, Calif., protesting what they consider illegal misclassification of drivers on the part of XPO Logistics and other third-party providers. However, Jacobs said in his address, “The Teamsters are out of control.”
   Jacobs said over 99 percent of XPO’s North America operations are non-unionized and “very likely to remain union-free.”
   “I don’t see the value they bring to employees or to the company,” he said of the Teamsters. “It’s a business they are running and they have to get membership up.”
   An XPO Logistics spokesperson told American Shipper today the company will conduct an investigation to see if the election process was lawful in Trenton.
   “We’re pleased that our employees in Aurora and Elgin have made a well-informed decision to vote down the Teamsters,” the spokesperson said. “Only 178 of our 44,000 North American employees have voted in favor of the Teamsters since 2015, and none of our locations have a collective bargaining contract in place.
   “For us, it remains business as usual. Our focus continues to be on the wellbeing of our employees, and on working together to deliver results that matter to our customers.”
