Port of L.A. cancels X-ray unit contract The Port of Los Angeles has canceled a contract to buy a cargo screening X-ray unit built by a company run by the son of Chinese President Hu Jintao, the Los Angeles Times reported Wednesday.
   “Port officials said the $1.88 million mobile scanning unit failed to meet requirements within the six-month period specified in the contract awarded in April 2008 to Beijing-based Nuctech Inc.,” the report said. “As a result, the unit, which had been installed on an American diesel truck, would be returned to the manufacturer.”
   The screening device was due to be used in the port’s cruise terminal to screen provisions and supplies.
   “The Port of Los Angeles will take this opportunity to assess the technologies currently available to scan provisions and supplies for the cruise ship terminal and will make a decision on how to best proceed,' the port said in a statement. 'In the meantime, supply trucks entering the cruise terminal will be inspected by port police personnel and canines, as was the practice during the testing of the unit.'
