Horizon Lines appoints new head of Guam operations

Horizon Lines appoints new head of Guam operations Jones Act ocean carrier Horizon Lines said it has appointed Hugh Healey to general manager of its Guam operations.
   Since joining Horizon predecessor Sea-Land Service Inc. in 1997, Healey has served in several positions including, Puerto Rico logistics manager and director of military and government sales. Most recently, he was Southeast regional sales manager.
   Horizon has been preparing for a huge increase in activity on Guam in anticipation of the 2010 move of U.S. military forces from Okinawa to Guam. Forces from the U.S. Navy, Marine Corp. and Air Force all plan expansion in Guam over the next several years as more than 8,000 military servicemen and their families are transferred to Guam from Okinawa.
   In anticipation of the island's impending growth, Horizon has added five new container vessels to the Guam trade, and is working with Pacific Islands trade competitor Matson Navigation to purchase, refurbish and install three gantry cranes at the Guam port to replace two aging cranes operated by the local port authority.
