Mason wins Hueneme port dredging contract

Mason wins Hueneme port dredging contract Mason Construction Corp. was awarded a $14 million contract Wednesday by the Army Corps of Engineers for a major navigation channel dredging project at the Port of Hueneme, according to the Ventura County Star.
   The Corps, the Navy and the Oxnard Harbor District will split the costs of the work, the paper said.
   The project, slated to begin in November according to the paper, would be the first dredging in parts of the port area in more than 20 years.
   Part of the plan calls for digging a large sediment pit in the ocean floor within the harbor and depositing 327,000 cubic yards of contaminated soil from the dredging project within the hole, according to a Port of Hueneme environmental document available on its Web site.
   These contaminated sediments would then be covered with clean sediments dredged from the remainder of the project, said the port document.
   The project will also use 572,000 cubic yards of clean sand removed in the creation of the sediment pit to nourish Hueneme Beach, the port document said.
   “We’re very excited about this, because for us it’s a win-win for all the parties,” Steve Granade, an environmental engineer working for Naval Base Ventura County’s public works department, told the Ventura County Star. “It restores the navigation of the harbor, cleans up the sediment and will add material (sand) to the beach.”
