The Defense Department is expected to award the contract for outsourced logistics before the end of the year. Many prominent 3PLs are expected to bid on the large contract to manage surface transportation for the DoD.
UPS selected a combination of trucking and technology companies that will provide shipment tracking and security capabilities. The primary subcontractor is Science Applications International Corp., a major San Diego-based defense and systems integrator that provides cargo security systems for detecting smuggled goods and radiation, terminal gate systems for processing trucks, as well as a transportation management system for shippers.
Team UPS includes:
* American Road Lines Inc., a non-asset-based company with local agents that hire truckers providing DoD transportation of general and specialized commodities.
* Boyle Transportation, which provides security guards to protect high-value defense industry shipments.
* Crowley Maritime Corp., an Oakland-based maritime logistics firm that provides ocean-barge towing and liner cargo service.
* CRST International, a large privately held trucking company that is qualified to carry DoD munitions.
* Green Valley Transportation, a qualified DoD munitions and general commodities carrier.
* IntelliTrans, a provider of consulting services, software and inventory tracking for the rail industry.
* Landstar System Inc., a large non-asset-based trucking company that uses third-party drivers and includes the DoD among its customers.
* Mercer Transportation Co, a specialized flatbed carrier.
* Norfolk Southern Railway.
* UPS Freight, the nationwide trucking subsidiary obtained by UPS through the takeover of Overnite Corp. last year.
* US Bank PowerTrack, a unit of U.S. Bancorp, a provider of automated freight payment services currently used by DoD logistics agencies.
* UTXL, a truckload and less-than-truckload carrier.
* YRC Worldwide, the largest less-than-truckload carrier in the United States through its operating companies such as Yellow Transportation and Roadway Express.
