New York-New Jersey container volumes up
   Port of New York and New Jersey reported 2010 container traffic improved 16 percent to 5.29 million loaded and empty TEUs, slightly below the 2007 record of 5.3 million TEUs.
   Terminal operator data showed loaded TEUs in 2010 totaled nearly 4.1 million. Loaded imports grew 14.9 percent to 2.58 million TEUs and exports rose 9 percent to 1.52 million TEUs.
   The port handled 376,770 containers through its ExpressRail system in 2010, up 22.3 percent, and nearing the annual record set in 2008.
   Cargo volume by weight (bulk and general cargo combined) was 81.4 million metric tons in 2010, 4.5 percent more than in 2009.
   The port's total general cargo volume, according to data from the U.S. Bureau of Census, increased to 32.2 million metric tons in 2010, compared to 28.2 million metric tons in 2009.
   General cargo imports increased 14.3 percent to 21 million metric tons. General cargo exports improved 13.9 percent to 11.2 million metric tons. Bulk cargo was down 1 percent to 49.2 million metric tons.
   Imports of organic chemicals, sugars, and fats and oils were up, but overall bulk imports were 40 million metric tons, down about 0.5 percent.
   Bulk cargo exports were 9.1 million metric tons, down 3.3 percent. However, there were significant increases in food waste/animal feed, cereals, and beverages.
