The order was signed yesterday at the Farnborough International Airshow in the United Kingdom, where the European aircraft builder announced plans for a new family of aircraft called A350 XWB (Extra Wide Body). The A350 XWB family will consist of four passenger versions and one freighter aircraft. Airbus said that the planes are slated to enter service in 2012 with a minimum range of 8,500 nautical miles.
“I want this company to get back to its basics: Airbus’ success has been based on the enormous courage it took to introduce the latest technologies, and on strong customer orientation with a spirit of always delivering more than expected. I want to keep this Airbus way of working, but on top be focused 100 percent on orderly execution and reliability,” said Christian Streiff, Airbus’ new president and chief executive officer, who took over from Gustav Humbert after delays to the A380 super-jumbo.
“Based on previous lessons learnt, the A350 XWB brings Airbus fully back into the game and will be a success. A success for customers, shareholders and all other stakeholders in Airbus,” said Streiff.
