The Salem, Oregon Statesman Journal quotes Joanne Verger, a state senator from Coos Bay, as saying the port is one of three sites that APM Terminals is considering for a $250 million container terminal. She is quoted as saying a decision is due in November.
The paper said she showed a packet of Maersk documents at a town meeting last week saying, “the people from the Port of Coos Bay have signed a confidentiality agreement, so they will not tell you the name of the company. I am not sworn to confidentiality.”
The paper said the company is thinking of building a $300 million to $700 million terminal in Coos Bay, British Columbia or Mexico.
In a statement to Shippers' NewsWire, the company said: 'APM Terminals is constantly planning for the short-, medium- and longer-term growth needs of its clients, as well as terminal services required by these clients. As a general rule, however, for competitive reasons, we have opted not to speculate on specific ongoing projects or project opportunities.'
Maersk will open a new terminal in Virginia later this year.
