The informal group, which will include a mix of customs attorneys, Miami area government officials with hands-on expertise in the processing of the mostly agricultural products, and interested importers, will travel to the Feria Agroalimentaria conference in Santo Domingo June 27-29, said Bunny Schreiber, aviation cargo specialist with the marketing division of the Miami-Dade Aviation Department. Schreiber is helping to organize the Dominican Republic trip, and said several experts from Miami are being organized into a panel for a seminar at the conference.
The panel and the overall trade mission is part of an ongoing series of 'perishables road shows' that have been organized in Miami for presentations in Latin America and the Caribbean in recent years.
Schreiber noted that whenever one of the 'road shows' is presented in another country, officials from U.S. Customs and Border Protection and other federal agencies in Miami notice a sharp increase in compliance with import regulations for imports from those countries.
Schreiber said in many instances perishable exporters simply do not have expertise in meeting U.S. regulatory requirements. By periodically organizing presentations at carefully selected conferences, the 'road show' experts can generate tangible reductions in problems related to perishables imports from those countries into Miami.
Miami International Airport is the leading U.S. gateway for perishables imports.
