New York Container Terminal deepens berth

New York Container Terminal deepens berth New York Container Terminal has completed dredging that will allow it to handle larger container ships.
The channel leading to the terminal on Staten Island, New York has been deepened from 35 to 41 feet, Jim Devine, chief executive officer, said Wednesday evening.
In the past, the terminal was only able to handle Panamax containerships carrying about 4,400 TEU. With the deepening, the terminal will now be able to handle ships of about 6,000 TEU. The terminal has container cranes that can reach across 18 rows of containers and others are being heightened to accommodate larger ships.
The deeper water also means that ships will be able to sail to the terminal at any time of day instead of waiting for high tides, a change that will save his customers 'thousands of dollars,' Devine said.
