Long Beach port awards local scholarships

Long Beach port awards local scholarships The Port of Long Beach last week awarded its annual round of college scholarships, this year handing out $27,000 in scholarships to 13 local college students.
   This year's scholarships, available to local students preparing for careers in international trade or port-related industries, were presented to six students from Long Beach City College and seven from California State University, Long Beach.
   Four scholarships were awarded to students in LBCC's School of Trade and Industrial Technologies, each with a certain specialty. The recipients are Prince Barrom, alternative fuels; Veasna Lim, welding; Eduardo Mendez, sheet metal; and Scott Schenk, heating, ventilation and air conditioning.
   William Chua and Richard Contreras received Woodrow Wilson Memorial Scholarships, presented each year to two outstanding LBCC international business students.
   Four students concentrating on international business at Cal State Long Beach's College of Business Administration were awarded scholarships: Karim Nalbandy, Thanh Chi Pham, Ricardo Gonzales Rugamas and Iris Souza.
   The port also awards scholarships for three graduate students in CSULB's Master of Arts in Global Logistics program: Hui Liu, Cara Royds and Paul Merritt.
   Including this year's scholarships, the port has awarded a total of $177,500 in scholarships to 161 students since 1993.
   The Port of Long Beach, the nation's second-busiest container port, reported fiscal year 2005-2006 revenue of just over $350 million and took in nearly $90 million in profits.
