Transportation and logistics jobs were down 2,100 in October 2015 amid slowdowns in the global economy, including an economic recession in China.
The Labor Department said the growth included gains in the warehousing, trucking and rail industries, as the U.S. economy added 211,000 new jobs overall for the month. Gains were led by growth in the construction, health-care services and retail sectors.
Trucking employment expanded by 2,300 jobs last month on a seasonally-adjusted basis and the railroad industry added 1,200 jobs, according to the report.
Hiring in the warehouse sector also continued to show strong growth, increasing by 3,000 jobs in November after a 5,100-job boost in October, as consumers have steadily shifted toward e-commerce leading up to the peak holiday shopping season. The warehousing industry has added 48,200 jobs in the last 12 months as retailers have attempted to keep up with growth in online sales.
E-commerce revenues for Black Friday 2015 were up 16.1 percent year-over-year over, while sales at brick-and-mortar stores declined because consumers have been taking advantage of online shopping as well as discounts offered by retailers leading up to the traditional shopping season.
