State plans sweep for recalled toys

State plans sweep for recalled toys The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS) said it is sending investigators into stores during the holiday season to determine if any of the more than 70 types of toys subject to federal recall orders are on store shelves.
The sweep is a local response to the widespread recall of toys, primarily imported from China, that have been targeted by the U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission as being unsafe. The toys have been identified for problems that include lead paint exposure, choking and strangulation hazards, sharp edges, and laceration dangers.
Inspectors were expected to be in stores by today, checking on randomly selected toys from the list of recalled products. If they find any toys from the recall list, they will inform store managers and give them written recall information provided by the Consumer Product Safety Commission.
The inspectors do not have the authority to order stores to remove the recalled items. But they will recommend removal and have store managers sign an inspection report.
“Unfortunately, people cannot assume that a toy is safe just because it is made by a well-known company,” said FDACS Commissioner Charles H. Bronson. “It is now a global marketplace and some of the top toy manufacturers have been impacted by the recalls this year.'
