Panama Canal using new generation of tugs The Panama Canal Authority (ACP) said Tuesday it has placed three new 'Z-Tech' tugboats into service, replacing aging tugs with cutting-edge new models that should lower lockage times and provide dramatically increased maneuverability.
   The tugs are used to assist vessels going in and out of the canal locks, and are also equipped to offer emergency assistance such as marine firefighting.
   “We are very excited to incorporate these new high-performance tugboats into our fleet,” said Manuel E. Ben'tez, ACP director of operations. “The increase in power and maneuverability will particularly be a great asset in reducing the current time used to approach the locks.”
