U.S. transportation employment rises modestly in July

The transportation and logistics sector added 900 position in July 2017 from June 2017, according to recent preliminary data from the U.S. Department of Labor.    United States transportation and logistics companies added 900 jobs for the month in July 2017, according to the latest preliminary data from the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). 
   Job gains in the sector during July were led by the courier segment, up 3,200 positions. Increases were also seen in the air segment, which grew employment by 500 positions, and the trucking sector, up 400 positions.
   Those increases were offset slightly by declines in the rail and water transportation sectors, down 100 and 200 jobs, respectively, for the month. Transit and ground passenger transportation and pipeline transportation employment was down 1,900 positions in total compared to the month prior.
   Compared with the same period last year, overall employment levels in the U.S. trade, transportation and logistics sector are up 90,200 jobs, a significant increase.
   Total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 209,000 in July, and the unemployment rate remained unchanged at 4.3 percent, according to BLS data.
