The Jacksonville, Fla.-based Class I railway said it would operate more, longer trains at higher speeds in an effort to enhance efficiency and improve connectivity for area manufacturers, farmers and marine ports.
The company will increase the speed of CSX Transportation (CSXT) trains along the corridor from the current speed limit of 25 miles per hour to a maximum of 40 mph in some locations. The railway said it has made track and signal improvements in accordance with federal regulations to allow for the safe increase in train speeds.
CSX said the increase in number and average length of CSXT trains in Indiana will vary depending on rail freight volumes. Twenty-four public and private highway-rail at-grade crossings will be impacted by the changes.
The operational changes come on the heels of recently announced adjustments by CSX on the Louisville & Indiana Railroad (LIRC), which also include running additional trains at higher speeds along the LIRC between Louisville and Seymour.
