NY/NJ port authority puts toll violators on notice

   Deadbeat truckers, bus companies, vehicle rental businesses and motorists who have racked up thousands of dollars of unpaid tolls at bridges and tunnels in the New York City metropolitan area are now having their identities exposed to shame them into compliance.
   The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey on Friday published its list of top toll violators, who collectively owe about $5 million. Several small trucking firms involved in goods transportation are named.
   The largest unpaid tab is for $1.7 million by Enterprise rent-a-car.
   The port authority said it has implemented a no-tolerance policy for toll violators.
   “I am committed to using toll revenues to maintain and improve the region’s infrastructure and I have therefore asked port authority staff to pursue all avenues to collect the monies owed to this agency, Executive Director Pat Foye said Friday.
   Port authority police will increase efforts to catch toll evaders and the worst violators will be prosecuted, he said. Five arrests were made Friday on the George Washington Bridge.
   “Moving forward, it’s pay up or face the consequences,” he said.
