Guonason named president, CEO of Eimskip

Guonason named president, CEO of Eimskip    The board of Eimskip has appointed Baldur Guonason president and chief executive officer of the Icelandic liner carrier operation.
   Guonason replaces Erlendur Hjaltason, who recently retired. Guonason, 38, has worked in the transportation industry, both in Iceland and overseas, for the past 15 years.
   The Eimskip board said it’s goal is to “strengthen and improve” the company’s transportation business. “The objective of Eimskip is for Iceland and the North Atlantic ocean to remain its home market, but for the company to develop its international transport operations, including the Baltic countries, the North Sea and the Mediterranean,” the board said in a statement.
   “There are substantial opportunities for growth in foreign markets” and the company plans to “further develop its international business through internal growth and the acquisition of transport companies in the regions in question,” the board added.
   The goal of Eimskip’s board, under Guonason’s leadership, is to achieve increased profitability and list the company on the Iceland Stock Exchange before year-end 2005.
