The Altavia was carrying housing units and other material from Korea that was to be used by construction crews to build military bases on the island, said U.S. military newspaper Stars and Stripes.
The Guam Department of Agriculture said the spiders were present in too many numbers to be destroyed.
Web site Pacific News Center said the ship departed Guam Monday night and will be allowed to re-enter only after being fumigated and reinspected by the Guam Customs and Quarantine and its Department of Agriculture.
The Web site said another ship carrying similar cargo from Korea was diverted to Busan for fumigation.
