India pushes for EDI system by year end The Indian government said this week it intends to link all major air and sea ports in the country with an online electronic data interchange system by the end of this year.
   A pilot test for the EDI program, which is intended to make the filing of import and export documents more efficient for shippers, has been ongoing since June.
   The system will cover 35 airports and seaports that together handle 94 percent of the country’s international trade, according to a report Wednesday from Exim News Service.
   Getting the system underway likely won’t be pain-free, as India is very much dependent on the physical processing of paperwork. But the system is expected to help shippers file bills of lading, pay duties and request drawbacks in a timelier manner than they currently experience.
