APL volume up, revenue plummets

   The Singapore-based liner carrier APL suffered an 18 percent drop in revenue on its global container volume in the period from Sept. 24 through Oct. 21, its parent company NOL said this week.
   APL’s average revenue per FEU carried during the period plummeted to $2,402, from $2,916 during the same period in 2010. Year-to-date, average revenue per FEU has fallen 9 percent, to $2,544.
   Meanwhile, the line’s volume continued to grow. In the Sept. 24 through Oct. 21 period, volume surged 13 percent, to 241,100 TEUs. For the year, APL’s volume is 2.4 million TEUs, 8 percent higher than in 2010.
   “The increase in volume was mainly due to higher volumes carried on the Intra-Asia trade lane,” NOL said. “The decline in average revenue per FEU was mainly due to lower rates in the major trade lanes.”
