Hutchison joint venture to build South China container terminals Hutchison Port Holdings and Huizhou Port Affairs Group Co. Ltd. today sealed a joint venture agreement to build two container berths in the Quanwan Port Zone of Huizhou Port in South China.
   The joint venture, Huizhou Port International Container Terminals, will have two new 50,000-ton container berths, a total berth length of 800 meters, a yard area of 60 hectares, and depth alongside and water channel of 15.2 meters.
   The partnership between Hutchison and Huizhou Port Affairs Group began last year with the investment of Huizhou Port Industrial Corp. Ltd., which operates four multipurpose berths and five oil berths at Huizhou Port.
   At the same time as the joint venture signing, two container quay cranes were installed at the existing multipurpose berths to raise the port's container handling capacity.
   The port will soon have door-to-door access to large and medium cities along two of China's major railway arteries, Beijing-Kowloon and Guangzhou-Meizhou-Shantou, upon completion of a railway extension to QPZ.
   'We will develop Huizhou Port into one of the leading ports in South China,' said John E. Meredith, Hutchison's group managing director.
