Dar es Salaam to receive port infrastructure upgrades

State-run China Harbour Engineering Company and the Tanzanian government have inked a contract to expand the Dar es Salaam seaport in Tanzania, according to a report from Splash 24/7.    State-run China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC) has signed a $154 million contract with the Tanzanian government to expand the port of Dar es Salaam, according to a report from maritime news outlet Splash 24/7.
A new roll-on/roll-off (ro-ro) terminal will be constructed and seven existing berths will be deepened, said Splash 24/7.
With competitiveness the motivating factor, Dar es Salaam aims to outpace Mombasa in Kenya in terms of becoming an East African maritime hub.
The funding for the contract comes from a $305 million loan from the World Bank, given to Tanzania in January for the Dar es Salaam port, reported Splash 24/7.
According to ocean schedule and capacity database BlueWater Reporting, there are currently eight container services and two ro-ro loops calling Dar es Salaam, connecting the port with Africa, Europe, the Middle East/Indian Subcontinent and Asia.
